Array-ne Ukrainian Embassy in Riga1) Info on Ukrainians in Latvia, excerpted from this, a publicly-run informational website about the EU: Ukrainians mainly entered Latvia after World War II and especially after 1959 as part of the labour force used to carry out large construction projects or as part of the Soviet army. It is questionable whether the limited use of Ukrainian on Latvian public radio (half an hour per week), its use in some cultural organisations and the very limited success of Ukrainian minority schools will help to revive the Ukrainian language. 2) Conference announcement: As it is in Ukrainian and I gotta run out, here are the basics in English: International Conference on Ukrainians in the BalticsRiga, December 9, 2005 Working Languages: Ukrainian and Latvian Organizing Committee Contacts: Konstjatyn Hupalo, President of Ukraine-Latvia Societyphone: 371 7598564email: konstag@inbox.lv Venta Kocere, director of the Latvian Academic Library phone: 371 710 6206 email: vkocere@lib.acadlib.lv Send submissions of your text for the conference by November 20 via email to isveice@akadlib.lv or to either of the above; for submission questions you may also call 371 759 8564 or 371 7106240Themes:Historical and political aspects and structures of the life of the Ukrainian diaspora in the Baltics, Baltic Studies in Ukraine, contemporary Ukrainian art in the Baltics, etc. M.Sci.Soc.

My last Tevis Ride?2002by Chris martin This story is about the 2002 Tevis ride (Western States Trail Ride) and the horse that fell off the cliff on Cal 2 better known as the California Loop, just out of Foresthill.I first rode the Tevis in 1999 and since that time, the ride has kinda taken on a life of its own. This year I started in January, riding different parts of the trail once a week. The horse I have been training and conditioning for four years came up with a reoccurring problem with his right fetlock, fracture of the sesamoid that never really healed. I had some big question marks at that time.I started conditioning rides with the horse (Bo), riding every day and sometimes twice a day. We did quite well on our first 25-mile training ride and then the next week we did a 40-mile training ride. During the last weeks, we were doing about 80 miles a week with our long ride days being on portions of the Tevis trail with our training buddies Jon and Spider. By his 8th week, which was the Tevis week, I was sick with the flu and we did almost no milage, but Bo was looking very fit, a much different horse from the pasture potato that I had started with seven weeks earlier. One week before Tevis I decided that I should buy Bo., just in case something happened, so we worked out a price, just a little more than the price of meat, and the deal was done. Jon and Spider had saved us a spot at RobieJon and I rode on Friday before we vetted in. We rode about 10 miles, Bo looked fine when we got back, still swollen but not lame at all. Jon got Spider a massage and he looked like he really enjoyed it.Ride morning started for me at about 3 a.m., with the ride actually starting at 5:15 a.m. I was kinda worried about having lost about 12 pounds with the flu and not having eaten anything since Sunday (not to mention having liquid coming out each portal). now we were really ready to ride.At about 5 a.m. Jon and I headed for the start line along with 250 other riders. As the trail opened up, we started moving faster and faster, riding with someone beside us and of course someone in front and someone in the rear. Before the ride, I had decided not to let him get over 160 for any length of time during the ride. Jon stopped and we blocked the trail until she got back on, after a couple of attempts, and then we were off again. The finish rate was in the 40th percentile, with 94 riders finishing.Jon and I had pre ridden the rest of the trail from Robinson to Auburn in different chunks during the last several months. The trail was not too bad but very dusty in spots, and they run you down a couple of canyons and back up again, all on single-track trails. Her horse looked fine and she ended up finishing the ride, as we found out later. It was only a 15-minute hold but they had good eats, ice-cold watermelon, lemonade, Coke, etc. From Last Chance, you head down into a canyon with a swinging bridge at the bottom, takes about a 30-minute ride with switch back after switch back. Some people get off their horses and jog down the trail which is single track and rocky in spots, but for the most part you can make good time over this stretch of trail. All of the sudden riders start stacking up on the trail and we’re moving at a snail’s pace. On the way down, we saw the same mule that we had seen at the beginning of the ride (the one that would not go over the bridge) coming back up towards us. The trail to Deadwood is actually more like a road and doesn’t have many rocks so you can pass there. The vet check at Deadwood was good, with lots to eat, and we spent lots of time letting the horses eat. We started this loop in the dark at about 9 p.m. Again, we weren’t too concerned about time as it was just a buckle ride (riding for the finish and not top ten) and trying not to be in the other 50 percent. Bo had light bars on his breast collar so the other riders could see him as we trotted down the trail. On about the third switch back of Cal 2, Bo was trotting fast with Jon and Spider right behind us when I heard some scrambling and then Jon saying, Going down. Two riders were in the corner, apparently coming up the trail as Spider rolled right over the trail in front of them. I sent the other two riders on to get help, let all the other 15 or so riders pass me, and then went back to find Jon. At this point, alone in the darkness and knowing that Spider was dead, the ride did not seem to be very important. He said they knew what had happened and that the sweep riders had already been in contact with Jon and were making plans to get him out. I decided that Jon had probably already been in touch with his wife on one of the radios that the sweep riders had and that he would beat me back to Auburn by a long shot.I pretty much took my time at Francisco’s, watching at least 20 riders pass along down the trail. Soon there were three riders, the drag riders coming from Francisco’s. Bo and I left the drag riders in the dust as we cantered that last two miles into the vet check. Bo had done this section of trail at least three times so he knew it well, but we had never done it in the dark and 60/minute was a real push even for daylight hours on a fresh horse. I could not have been prouder of Bo if he’d had the four years of conditioning instead of his meager six weeks. We walked into the stadium where Bo vetted through, looking very good, I might add, for a horse that just ran and last six miles of a 100-mile ride. I assured her that Spider had to be dead, that there was no way he could have survived that fall, and vowed never to do this ride againBo ate some hay as we were talking and we saw a truck pull into the parking lot. I ran out and could see Jon riding in the back of the trailer with Spider. His right eye was somewhat swollen and he looked like a prize fighter, (the looser).I got Bo and took him over to keep Spider company while we waited for the vet to show up to treat Spider. Jon told us of the rescue while we waited.Jon said that he and two volunteers, and the vet, Jamie Kerr followed the path that Spider had taken off the trail of Cal 2 on his journey down towards the river, with Jon in the lead. The volunteers cut some brush and small trees out of the way so that they could walk Spider down this steep section closer to the river.Dr. Jamie Kerr stayed with Spider, letting him eat the green grasses alongside the river while Jon went downstream to see if they could get to Ford’s Bar. By the time Jon had turned around, Dr. Kerr and the other two had decided that the best way out was the way that Jon had gone, downstream, so they started crossing the river. or the way Dr. Kerr tells it, Spider pulled him up the trail the whole four milesAfter Jamie Kerr returned to the fairgrounds, he made a more comprehensive inspection of Spider and spent some time cleaning out the puncture wound. Jon and his wife rode on the quad they had brought and Peter, their son, rode with me. Jon told me that Spider wanted to look all scarred up like Bo so that’s why he fell down the mountain. Jon and his wife gave us a gift, it was a Manx Kitten, with the name of Tevis, who thinks that she “is the Tevis God”.Three weeks later Bo and Spider were racing on the wonderful trails at Point Reyes, The hard rocky terrain of the Tevis seemed so far away.

BRENTWOOD, TN – Following news that the U.S. Senate Finance Committee announced an investigation into the taxes paid and possible loopholes used by major oil companies, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ed Bryant today said Democrat primary voter Bob Corker should not expect to be held to a different standard than Big Oil.In response to Bryant’s release of his full unadjusted income taxes, Corker only released his adjusted gross income, in an apparent effort to hide from Tennesseans the total amount he earned, the total amount he owed, and the ways in which he avoided paying those taxes with various loopholes and write-offs.In his previous run for the Senate, Corker released more comprehensive tax records, which revealed he used loopholes in the law to avoid paying any income taxes in 1985 and 1989. Corker then went on as Mayor of Chattanooga to raise property taxes, create a brand new hotel/motel tax, and raised fees on businesses and consumers. In the interest of full disclosure for the gas-tax payers, the U.S. Senate has rightfully requested to seelink

Do you believe President Bush misled the nation in order to go to war with Iraq? Yes94% No5.9% Not a scientific survey but 87,377 MSNBC viewers have voted in this poll… MSNBC is not exactly a Liberal organization. America has very grave questions about this war. Why are we there…Really? What are our goals in Iraq? How will we accomplish them..What’s the plan, exactly? How successful have we been so far? How long is this going to take?I would answer those questions with, Goals? What goals?…Plan? What plan?…Success? What success?…and Who the bleep knows? The only way the public will find out is for Congress to have an open and honest discussion about Iraq. One in which some substance bubbles to the top..Not something idiotic like, Liberals just want to cut and run.Well just what, exactly, do the Conservatives want to do? What American goals will be achieved by sacrificing the health and lives of another thousand American warriors? Do you like seeing Cindy Sheehan out and about? Think America will be better off with one thousand more Cindys?Ready to volunteer to be one? That is the question that all of us have to answer regarding war:Is this such a grave threat to the future of our country that my child should die for it?A bill is now in Congress to debate this question….Bart Gordon has signed it…Lincoln Davis has not. Harold Ford Junior has not signed it. Why not? Here is the full list of Tennessee Representatives who do not want Congress to discuss the Iraq war.Bill Jenkins (R-01)John Duncan Jr. (R-02)Zach Wamp (R-03)Lincoln Davis (D-04)Jim Cooper (D-05)Marsha Blackburn (R-07)John Tanner (D-08)Harold Ford Jr. (D-09)Heres the list for the entire country…Call em!Open DebatePeace,Stevelink

(my nod to chronological sequence - this may be the only time!)Credo: I believe in something far greater than us. I believe that Music is one of the first gifts this Creator bestowed on humanity, whether you see us as perfected Adam and Eve, or some descended-from-apes Version 5.0 of sentient life. Caroles kids are all talented - Steve is a drummer with whom I’ve had the good fortune to play in several bands. There was a sterility about it I hated, and a purity about it I loved, all at once. Most of the music I heard was of others’ choice when I was little - my mother’s opera music, the standards on the radio stations my father worked at, the folk music my sister favored, the surf music more to my brother’s liking. In fact, I remember when I was 12, taking a bus to Los Angeles from my sister’s home then in Fresno, entertaining my fellow passengers by playing and singing various songs by the likes of Credence Clearwater Revival and Bob Dylan - stuff that was easy on acoustic guitar. I quickly learned to enjoy the combination of music and travel. In junior high, at 12, I paired up with a classmate, Deanna, for my first attempt at a garage band. During those, I found ways to stay sane, whether practical jokes or exploring local culture.By high school, I was having difficulty finding other musicians nearby who were interested in the same music I was. It was complete physical expression of the emotions I felt through music, and I loved it from the first modern dance assembly I’d watched. It actually turned out to be a good thing - the Music department at Santa Ana College was two years of absolute, Animal House hilarity as well as good basic education in Music Theory, History and Composition. Now, this was altogether different from my 1971 Hawaiiam stint with the Fullerton-based New Sounds - that had been two shows a day most days, (three one day), a radio show on the way to the hotel from the airport, and a TV taping on the way to the airport from the hotel. We only had three gigs in a week - what else were college-aged music kids to do in Paradise but have a bit of fun?University was far different. Cal State Fullerton’s music department was far from what I’d expected, headed by a faculty that seemed to resent gigging (how does a real musician resent the chance to perform?!) and anything associated with contemporary music. (Truthfully, I wanted to step back and try my hand at Music again at Pierce College, but circumstances never permitted.) I was one of the first female athletic training students at Fullerton. I also supplemented my softball, fencing, hoops, and failed attempts to get a women’s soccer team going at the school (on the suggestion of a few male players who I guess I’d impressed during some impromptu practice sessions) with belly-dancing lessons, an activity I fell in love with on many levels - the physical, the mental, the sensual, the spiritual, and of course the musical - learning to play odd-meter patterns with finger cymbals!Things changed immensely after I graduated in 1977……but that’s another chapter.

After winning nine in a row, I was excited to watch the Phils go for a double digit win streak for the first time in at least 15 years against the 78-year old Tom Glavine and the Mets last night. This is an important start early in the year for a young kid like Gavin Floyd, who is going up against the also 78-year old (i.e., savvy veteran) Steve Trachsel).Speaking of the Philberts, they called up Cole Hamels yesterday. Look for him to be in the rookie of the year conversation this year. Except maybe Edmonton/San Jose, which had a great three overtime thriller last night, with Edmonton becoming only the 5th of 8 remaining teams to win a game in this round, despite the fact that everyone has had three tries at it. Not that I think it is a bad show, it is just that in my priority order of stuff to do, it comes in after stuff like chasing my three year old back to bed for the 23rd time of the night.

The situation in occupied Palestine is going from desperate to catastrophic. The decision of the USA and the EU to cut off funding to the Palestinian Authority in order to punish the Palestinians for electing a government which does not meet with the approval of Israel, America and the European Union has plunged the region into chaos. The Association of International Development Agencies recently issued a press release warning against the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza six months after the Israeli redeployment according to a group of 36 international aid agencies working in the Palestinian territories. He said: “All the international aid agencies put together will not be able to replace the services that the Palestinian Authority provides to the people in the Gaza Strip.”(My emphasis)The critical situation has led to violence erupting in Gaza with clashes between Hamas and Fatah as any semblance of law and order breaks down. Over the long run you hope that the winds even out their favours across the whole area, but at present I have a feeling that the north end of the line is doing slightly better. With the wind dead astern you are constantly offered two options, to go to the left or the right of the course. In the present conditions we may gybe as many as 16 times in 24 hours.Teaching crews to gybe is something of a headache for the training crews in the UK. In discussion the other day it was estimated that gybes during training can take up to 20 minutes to complete, with the skipper and training mate running around like mad things trying to keep the spinnaker flying and the crew unharmed. At present the fastest gybe performed on BP Explorer is 2.5 minutes and I don’t think I was on deck at the time.

During his prime, Dave Gagner was a skillful scorer whose game was aided by his great determination and grittiness. Standing just 5′10 and 180lbs, Dave played much bigger than his listed size. He was an aggressive and fearless little guy who was a 30 goal threat when at his best. Twice he topped 40 goals. An intelligent player, Gagner wasnt a great skater but knew how to shake his check to get open. A finisher more than a playmaker, Dave possessed a good shot with a quick release. An adequate-at-best defensive player, Gagner was an on-ice leader. He was an admirable NHLer, giving everything he had on every shift.Despite being a high draft pick, Dave took a long time to justify his lofty selection. The 12th pick in the 1983 Entry Draft by the NY Rangers, Dave played for the Canadian Olympic Team at the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo and finished the tournament as the teams third leading scorer. He followed that up with a tough adjustment to the pro ranks, alternating between the Rangers and their AHL affiliate during the 1984-85, 1985-86, and 1986-87 seasons. The Chatham Ontario native moved on to Minnesota in 1987-88. Despite tearing up the IHL with 16 goals and 26 points in 14 games, Dave was still unable to make any impact at the NHL level, scoring just 8 goals in 51 games.Things changed for the better for Dave in 1988-89. Voted as the North Stars Most Improved Player, he exploded with 35 goals and 78 points, proving to be a top 2 line center. So why did he finally succeed after so many failures in the past? Well, opportunity is the main reason. The North Stars brought in a new coach in Pierre Page that season and he immediately liked Gagners spunk and energy. After a strong training camp, Page called him “the hardest worker in the National Hockey League.” Under Pages coaching systems, Gagner was finally in a perfect fit, and finally was given a chance to succeed. And succeed he did.Dave had an incredible start to the year. 22 goals and 41 points by mid season. He slowed down a bit in the second half of the year but ended up with 35 goals and 78 points in what amounted to his first full NHL season.Page would only coach the team one more year, but Gagners success continued for many years to come. He followed up his breakthrough season with a 40 goal, 78 point 1988-89 season. He had a career high 82 points including a second consecutive 40 goal year in 1990-91. Which saw him win team MVP honors as well as an appearance in the All Star game.He continued to be a consistent scoring threat, scoring 31, 33, and 32 goals in the following 3 years before slowing down a notch. He scored 14 goals in the lockout shortened 1995 season.Half way through the 1995-96 season, after 14 goals in 45 games with the Stars, the team traded Dave to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a deal that was designed to strengthened the Leafs. The Leafs already had superstar Doug Gilmour on their lineup, and Gagners style of play was similar. Though nowhere near as good defensively, Dave was a poor mans version of Gilmour - very spirited, fearless play with good offensive output.Dave however wasnt able to supply as much offense in Toronto as was hoped. He scored 7 goals in 28 regular season games, as well as 15 assists. However he registered only 2 assists in 6 playoff games in a disappointing spring for the Leafs.Toronto traded the grizzled veteran to Calgary come the 1996-97 season. He had a decent year in Calgary, scoring 27 goals and 60 points in the offensive drought of the late 1990s. It was good timing for Dave too, as he was an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year. As a result, Dave signed a lucrative contract with the offense hungry Florida Panthers.Dave was never able to supply what was expected in Florida. Scoring 20 goals and 48 points for a player who signed for over 2 million dollars a year, Gagner was soon on the trading block. The trade came in the form of a blockbuster as Gagner was part of the Florida package sent to Vancouver for hold out star Pavel Bure!Vancouver was weak at center and it was hoped that Gagner, in the last year of his contract, could step in and help out. Unfortunately Gagner, who was ultimately nothing more than a throw-in in the Bure deal in order to make financial sheets balance, Gagner was very ineffective. He scored just 2 goals in 33 games with the Canucks.Following his awful year, no teams were interested in Gagner and he had little option but to retire.I’m very fortunate to have made a living playing the game I love. At this time, I would like to spend more time with my family and pursue other interests.Dave will always be remembered as a solid NHLer, a hard worker and a great team guy.Labels: Dave Gagner

Array And Schiebel’s liberal stance runs in the family: his mother, Jean, served as one of 10 U.S. Electoral College electors in Minnesota for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry for the 2004 election. But Schiebel, 47, often takes heat from fellow liberals in the blogosphere on a host of issues ranging from Minnesota’s smoking ban to welfare policy to the war in Iraq. After discussing my break with the liberal wing of the DFL on the War on terror, they sneak in a comment Charley made regarding the level of civility here at Centrisity:I celebrate that our disagreement has been polite and respectful, with none of the name-calling and dismissiveness that has often been typical of these discussions,Even a hat tip from Mitch:He gets flak from both sides.

-ne With upcoming elections in Georgia, the attention is back on a theme that otherwise often gets neglected: what does the Georgian electorate want? One of the ideas is to conduct an exit poll, to track the scale of any potential manipulation. One reason, it is said, is that at least one opposition candidate is considering financing his own exit poll, and getting a large exit polls supported by international donors may counterbalance any biased results that have been paid for by a single candidate. At face value, this seems like an attractive idea and it has a number of supporters.

-ne Watching woodcocks: A favorite rite of spring(published 3-3-05)For birders, signs of spring start well before winter gives up its grip. This is one of the true highlights of the local birding year and something every bird watcher should witness at least once.As a kid, one of my first “beyond the backyard” On the ground, in between flights, woodcocks make a buzzy, one-syllable call that’s easily recognized. All of this takes place at twilight, so woodcocks are seldom seen in great detail. Occasionally, though, a high-beam flashlight can pick up a bird when it lands, affording a glimpse of these odd-looking birds. Plan to join one of several woodcock outings offered by local birding clubs later this month. Start time is 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 630-584-8386.Reiter is a Glen Ellyn, Illinois, resident who enjoys birding at home and in the field.

In Exodus 23, Israel is commanded to offer the firstfruits of the soil — their crops — to God. Often, the discussion on giving centers around our financial responsibility to give cheerfully & support the work of the local church. If our time is truly more valuable than even our earnings, then surely our responsibility to give extends to our day-timer, too. Am I giving God the firstfruits of my time? Give him the firstfruits He deserves. To the author of time…Until time is no more…May our gifts — insufficient & inadequate — bring you praise nonetheless, O Ancient of Days

Players bet that fans would never watch replacment players. The league maintained that they could not use a hard number when revenues were completely unknown. The NHL, having spent the last five months promoting the game with new rules, new attitude and competitiveness amongst all teams unilaterally implemented their offer and opened the doors to the players. In response, the NHLPA went on strike and said they would challenge the decision in court citing unfair labor practices were about to take place.Replacement players were brought in from all corners of the earth, filling every team with 23 players. It worked well in many cases as families could suddenly afford to watch a pro sport they had always heard about but never wanted to spend 00 to go and see for themselves. With new rules opening up the ice and lesser quality players in a game all about mistakes, the entertainment value had skyrocketed, even if the best players in the world were not part of it. Most were players at the tail end of their careers, lower-end players who needed the money and couldn’t get jobs in Europe and AHL players who saw an opportunity to make better money.Attendance levels were understandably down from previous years’, however the hit was nowhere near as great as many had expected. Large market teams were breaking even, some middle market teams were struggling but most were surviving and many small market teams had actually seen a steady increase in attendance over the first three months.Just after Christmas, a group of twenty star players crossed the line and resumed playing for their respective clubs. Some players appear so bitter from the process and angry with how their leadership had failed miserably, remain in Europe and appear to be content to play out their days and not return.

Array The teachings of an all-male priesthood, marriage, and the sanctity of life all fall into the category of doctrine.’What about celibacy for priests? In fact, the Church didn’t institute the discipline of celibacy for priests until about the 11th century AD. The Church has acknowledged that celibacy is a supernatural gift for some people.Celibacy is a different kind of love. He allows those to whom He is giving the gift of celibacy to share in this sacrificial kind of love.Jesus refers to celibacy in Matthew 19:12 when he says that there are some who forsake marriage for the sake of the kingdom. They marry the Church when they promise celibacy, as Christ is married to the Church (see Ephesians 5).
